The events take place in 1968. The famous Italian writer and playwright Aldo Braibanti ends up in prison after being accused of having a homosexual relationship with an eighteen-year-old boy. The guy's father is the main witness for the prosecution, which appeals to the law, which at the time prohibited intimate contact between members of the same sex. The guilty verdict carries nine years in prison.

Braitanti's student, who soon became his friend, at the behest of his parents, ends up in a psychiatric hospital. There, the young man is prescribed therapy in the form of electric shock sessions.
