Cities of Last Things (2018)

A coproduction of companies from Taiwan, China, France and the United States, the film opens with the suicide of Zhang Dong Ling and then tells, in reverse chronological order, the story of three key incidents from his life leading up to the fateful decision. Each of the three segments draws from a different genre: the first segment is a science fiction story set in a dystopian vision of the year 2035, the second a film noir segment focusing on Zhang's earlier job as a police officer, and the third a melodrama about Zhang's childhood encounter with a local organized crime boss.
