The Otises become the new owners of an old English mansion. It once belonged to Sir Simon de Canterville, who, according to legend, killed his wife, and for this his spirit remained locked in this house. Canterville himself is accustomed to the fact that he easily instills terror in those who cross the threshold of this house, so no one stays within its walls for long. However, the Otises turn out to be completely different from other buyers. The methods used by the spirit do not affect them; on the contrary, the new owners look at them with tenderness. Besides the fact that the Otises are not at all afraid of the ghost, the girl Virginia is also trying to help him lift a long-standing curse.
